Monday, February 22nd, 2010
I'm sitting in the airport. I got here really early. Way too early. I had a feeling I'd be way too early, but it's hard, when you're me, to not want to be early. I'm the kind of guy who thinks that 45 minutes before the movie starts is a totally reasonable thing to do, and that 30 mins before the movie starts is pushing it. Yikes. This was actually a touch call though... would hte airport be busy because of the Olympics? Hard to predict. In any case, I predicted wrong.
Oh, and my flight was over an hour late (snow storms in Toronto...) and so I'll be sitting here for about 3.5 hours, all said and done. I had bought some food supplies for hte long, 15 hour flight. Beef Jerky, and a bunch of these great little totally Paleo energy bars (Larabars! Soy and Gluten free!) But ... unfortunately I ate them all already. Haha. I was really hungry. Shoot. Now I'll have no extra food for my endless flight. Woe is me!
So I'll have to sustain myself with writing, reading, music and photography. And water. Oh, and checking my email on my phone. Olympics were on TV too. Oh wait, they're back. Temporary blackout. Maybe the TV signal needed de- icing in goddamn Toronto, too?
My writing system here is great. (You know I'm the kind of guy who actually love stationary stores, and paper, and pens.) I have a great pen (Swagelok branded. Francy!) and new Moleskine journal (props Ross for the tip.) It's hard NOT to write, with tools like these.
I've got a couple of books too. I wanted to buy a couple of "throwaway" softcovers for the trip, but I accidentally bought like 80 dollars worth of hardcovers at Chapters. Hardcovers! Oops! God. I can't be trusted in a bookstore. Oh well. I bought "Inherent Vice" by Thomas Pynchon (pricey) and "What the Dog Saw". A throwaway book for sure, not worthy of my collection, but such a beautiful hardcover edition that I just couldn't resist. Glittery blue lettering!
I know, I know. I'm crazy with the books. I told you. I cannot be allowed near a Chapters.
Chapters is to Mitch is to books what an elementary school is to pedophiles is to children. "The Defendant is not allowed within 300 metres of the establishment."
Ok, more later...
...
Later... has come and gone. I did my flight. 15 hours or so. I watched two movies (Law Abiding Citizen, poor ending, but good enough throughout, and Surrogates, terrible throughout) then I slept for ... 11 hours? Then I woke up and watched Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs, which was very good. Then we landed. The Chinese lady next to me: "Wow! You sleep so long! I keep looking over and you sleep and sleep and sleep! So good!"
She was very nice, and I was indeed proud of all my good sleep work.
Anyway, I guess that it was a pretty uneventful flight. Immigration was dead easy, except for unpacking every single damned thing (mostly underwear and socks) to show some uninterested asshole quarantine officer a pair of running shoes that were nearly spotless, so he could say "ok" and watch me spend 10 minutes packing it all back together.
So I guess "Day 0" is really already over, so I should stop writing. See you in Day 1!
Mitch out.

Kate Gaunce, 2010-02-25, 20:27:05 Ahhh long flights they are the best! Free booze, good movies, and interesting people. I can remember on my first flight to Korea I sat next to a cute little Korean grandfather, after sleeping for about 6 hours I woke up to him staring at me he waited a few seconds then said, "you sleep so long I worry for your health." and then proceeded to show me the thousand pictures he had taken on his trip. |

When are you coming back?? I miss you long time! - Fox, 2010-03-10, 19:21:25 Where are you? Do you fill your Australian days with running? Do you miss your great little apartment? You should. It's awesome. The people having sex have now stopped and are in the domestic dispute stage of their relationship. It's now like listening to live UFC fights but without having to make fun of that Australian waitress at the Junktion. You're missing out on so much! The Paralympics start on Friday. Why would you abandon your city amid so much excitement? |

FAIL - Tim, 2010-03-15, 13:41:49 You finished your blog post with, "See you in Day 1!", and thus implying that you'd give us an update of Day 1. But no. You've gone and failed at blogging. You can't just blog Day 0 and then leave us hanging for the trials and tribulations of your trip. |
