Share on Facebook 2008-10-20: Australia Trip - Day 5 - Pubs and Casinos

Day 5... Sunday, October 5, 2008

After our big beach adventure on Saturday, we weren't really quite up to another big day outside. Plus the weather was shit again.

So we decided the best way to spend the day was indoors. Our plan was pretty half-assed, but mostly consisted of walking around and drinking. We hadn't done that much of that to date, so today was our day.

Both Brendon and Sam had suggestions as to which were "great" pubs. Brendon thought his might be one of, if not the, best pubs in Sydney. I'm not sure what Sam thought. I think he was going for quantity and not so much quality.

So our first stop was a place called The Belgian Beer Cafe. They had tons of cool beers (Belgian, I assume), and the atmosphere was great. Except that some rugby final game was on TV, which, as you know, or should know, drive the shit out of me. It's as annoying as when you go out and there's a hockey game on in Vancouver. Seems like every asshat in the city decides to go out during a hockey game. God I hate watching sports on TV. I think I have my dad's insistance on watching baseball rather than letting me and Fran play video games, when we were kids, to thank for that!

After our delicious beer at the BBC (I convinced Brendon and Sam to try the Hefeweissen (sp?) which they didn't really like...) we headed off. At one point Sam tried to open some arbitrary door, a huge metal and glass door, for whatever reason. Inside, I noticed a super cool wall of marble or something. So I went in. To what turned out be some high tech, secret CIA building or something, because the girl at the serious metal desk told me I wasn't allowed inside. That I could take a picture, but that it was "naughty". I swear she used that word. I took a picture and left quickly. I didn't want to be deported for being naughty.

Our next stop was a place called the Lowenbrau or something. Sam promised girls in "those german outfits" and lots of beer. Indeed, after ordering a full 3 litres of beer for us (in three one litre glasses), he delivered on both counts. The majority of the bar was packed with girls, not the type "in german outfits" unfortunately, but dressed up to the nines (whatever that means) for the rugby thing (maybe?) Whatever they were dressed up for, I approved.

It took a damned while to drink a litre of beer straight, and I'm not even sure what kind of beer it was. Not the best, but not bad I guess. $20/L seems like a lot? I can't tell.

After leaving the Lowenbrau, I think we headed towards the Casino. Brendon and Sam have been big on the gambling thing lately, and I was excited to see them in action. Despite my overly cautious and boring approach to gambling causing them to play a bit more ... subdued, Sam still managed to win around two thousand bucks. Pretty impressive, really. I myself made some cash too ($65?) and Brendon won as well. After the casino (which included a trip to the mall for some fast food, something I have done more this past week than I care to admit) we headed back into the city, which turned out to be a mistake. Despite nearly all restaurants being closed, there were people everywhere... and the main street in Sydney (the equivalent of combining Granville and Georgia, in Vancouver) is a gong show on the best of days. Eventually we settled on the worst bar I've ever been to, had half a beer, played the slot machines, and left. We caught a cab and called 'er a night.

Despite our epic failure near the end there, it was another good day of touristing!

ps: note that some of the photos might be screwed up. Uploading from this shit internet cafe is causing me some major ass pain... I'll try to do it properly later.
